Today in Europeana: 2 December

On the 2nd of December –
The University of Leipzig founded; Napoleon crowned emperor; a train highjacked near Wijster in the Netherlands.

in 1409 the University of Leipzig was founded. Below are pictures of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary in 1909. Unfortunately these big pageant style celabrations are no longer held. Who can tell me what happened on the 600th anniversary in 2009?

In 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor:

Coronation of Napoleon Fan

And of course Josephine was crowned empress at the same occasion:
Sacre de l'empereur Napoléon Ier et couronnement de l'impératrice Joséphine

In 1975 a small group of south-Moluccan radicals highjacked a train in Wijster in the Netherlands. Their puporse was to get attention for the plight of the South Moluccans in the Netherlands, who wanted to establish an independent South Moluccan republic (long, long story). Three of the hostages were killed, among them the train driver and a conscript soldier who happened to be on the train. At the same time the Indonesian consulate in The Hague was also taken hostage.
The picture shows the remaining hostages being escorted out of the train by Dutch military. Notice the obligatory beard on the soldier:
