Today in Europeana: 6 December

On the 6th of December –
Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin was born, Gynnar Myrdal was born; bogus restoration of ‘Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue’ was dicovered

Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, father of the modern illusionist tradition, was born in 1805. The album below gives some drawings of his spectacular feats of magic.

Gunnar Myrdal, Swedish Nobel-Prize winning economist and sociologist, was born in 1898 in Gustafs, Sweden.

The painting ‘Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue’ by Barnett Newman was damaged and then restored. On 6 December 1986 (?) it was dicovered that the ‘restorer’ of the painting used a paint roller to fill in the red, thereby destroying the apparently delicate brushwork. Three Dutch artists then sued both the museum and the restorer for the destruction of the painting.
