Today in Europeana: 10 December

On the 10th of December –

Marten Luther burns the papal bull Exsurge Domine; César Franck is born in Liege (Luik); actor Rien van Nunen is born in Hillegom.

In 1520 Marten Luther publicly burned the papal bull Exsurge Domine, in which the pope had ordered him to recant his position.
This sculpture may convey some of the willingness of Luther to turn the other cheek:

Luther, Martin
The grammar school (VWO) I attended in Rotterdam was called CGS Maarten Luther, and of course special attention was given to the history of the Lutheran reformation. It later merged with the CSG Johannes Calvijn, and as always in the Netherlands, Calvijn prevailed.

In 1822 composer César Franck was born in Liege (Luik, then still a part of the Netherlands, and now part of Belgium).
In Europeana we have pictures of him, some sheet music, and (drum roll..) some audio clips:

Les plaintes d'une poupée
Sonate En La Majeur - Allegro

Rien van Nunen, Dutch actor, was born in 1912. He played in Stiefbeen en Zoon (the Dutch adaptation of Steptoe and Son), but will always be remembered as the mayor from Swiebertje, the longest-running Dutch television series.
