On the 14th of December –

Roald Amundsen and his team reach the South Pole; French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes is born, as is French tennis legend Henri Cochet.

In 1911 the team of Norwegian team of Roald Amundsen, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, and Oscar Wisting, become the first humans to reach the South Pole. At the same time a British team lead by Robert F. Scott was in hot pursuit, and reached the pole a few weeks later on January 17th 1912.

French tennis legend Henri Cochet was born in 1901 in Villeurbanne. He won the French Open in 1922, 1926, 1928, 1930 en 1932 and won Wimbledon twice. He was one of the ‘Four Musketeers‘ of French tennis in the 1920s and 30s. In the video fragment below you can see the opening of that tournament in 1978, where he is honoured as one of the past winners, together with Henri Lacoste and otehrs. At 2m15s you can see Cochet play in a 1927 Davis Cup match in Philadelphia.
