Oliver Cromwell sworn in as Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland; French Marchal Alphonse Juin is born; Spanish poet Rafael Alberti is born.

In 1653 Oliver Cromwell was sworn in in his new role as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland.

French Marchal Alphonse Juin is born in 1888 in Bône. He fought in both WW1 and WW2, in the latter first on the French side, then on the nazi-supported Vichy-side, and later with the Allied forces angainst the Axis. Later he was a big shot in NATO. Interesting career.

Spanish poet Rafael Alberti is born in Puerto de Santa María in 1902. After Franco’s victory in the Spanish Civil War he fled to Buenos Aires in Argentinia. He returned to Spain in 1977. He died in 1999.
