On the 17th of December –

Antanas Smetona assumes power in Lithuania; Jules de Goncourt was born; Appenzell joins the Eidgenossenschaft.

Antanas Smetona assumes power in Lithuania in 1926 after a successful coup d’etat. He was bot the first and the last president to serve in Lithuania betweeen WW1 and WW2. And he did this stint in between.

Jules de Goncourt was born in Paris in 1830. He wrote together with his brother Edmond, and together they founded a publishing house. Their name lives on in the Prix Goncourt, the major literary prize in France.

In 1513 Appenzell joins the original Swiss ‘Eidngenossenschaft’ thereby completeing the thirteen of the ‘Dreizehn Alten Orten‘ – the nucleus of the Swiss state, which consited in that form from 1513 to 1798. Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden were the first to join forces in 1291.
