On the 18th of December –

Abel Tasman is the first European to land in New Zealand; Paul Klee is born.

In 1642 Abel Tasman Jansz. becomes the first Europeana to land in New Zealand. He named it after a province of the Netherlands: Zeeland. His own name lives on in the name of the island of Tasmania.

Swiss artist Paul Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee in 1879. Highly individual and influential, he later taught at the Bauhaus.
