Today in Europeana: 27 December

On the 27th of December –

The Hagia Sophia is finished; the Beagle sails from Plymouth; Dutch relinquish control over Indonesia.

In 537 the Hagia Sophia in Byzantium, present-day Istanbul, was finished. It started off as a church, and is now one of the biggest mosques in the world.

In 1831 Charles Darwin embarks on the Beagle for his journey round the world during which he will formulate and prove the principles of evolution. Europeana has masses of Darwin related stuff, including this:
Journal of researches into the natural history and geology of the countries visited during the voyage around the world of H. M. S. 'Beagle' under the command of Captain Ftiz Roy, R. N., by Charles Darwin .

In 1949 the Dutch government passes sovereignty over ‘Nederlands-Indië’ to the Republic of Indonesia in theperson of Mohammed Hatta.
