On the 28th of December –

an earthquake hits Messina; the Lumiere brothers show the first film; Cyrano de Bergerac premieres.

In 1908 a 7,2 magnitude earthquake hits the town of Messina on Sicily. Over 75.000 people are killed.

In 1895 the brother Lumieres show the first ever motion picture in Paris.

Auguste Lumieres died in 1954 – and his funeral was fittlingly recorded on film:

In 1897 the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand premieres in Paris. Both photos below are from the Nadar studios. They are not double because they are meant to be stereoscopic – an early form of 3D – but probably as a way to economise on the use of glass negatives.
