On the 3rd of January –

Leonardo da Vinci unsuccesfully tests a flying machine; Mussolini becomes dictator of Italy; the Amsterdamse Schouwburg (city theatre) is opened.

In 1496 Leonardo da Vinci tries out a flying machine and barely survives. He focussed too much on the mechanical motion of bird wings, and not enough on the eaerodynamic principles of lift.

In 1925, Benito Mussolini, some three years after the ‘March on Rome’, assumes dictatorial powers in Italy.

In 1638 the Amsterdamse Schouwburg is opened. The first play performed there is the Gijsbrecht van Amstel by Vondel. It was written specifically for this opening. Opening the new year with that play remained a tradition in that Schouwburg until the 1960’s.
