On the 5th of January –

Robert–François Damiens tries to assasinate Henri XV; first scientific journal appears ; Adriaan Viruly is born.

In 1757 an attempt by Robert–François Damiens to assassinate French King Henri XV fails. The culprit is duly drawn and quartered.

In Parus the first edition of the Journal des Sçavans appears, the first regular scientific journal. In Europeana we have editions from 1668 and later, in the collection of the UB Gent. The image below is for a later edition from 1780:

Dutch aviator and author Adriaan Viruly was born in 1905. His major accomplishments include being the first to fly a scheduled KLM-flight to the Dutch East-Indies (Indonesia), and marrying Mary Dresselhuiys, famous Dutch actress. He told his good friend Wim Kan: “I read a lot of magazines and newspapers, beacause you learn so much from them. Only I skip the articles on aviation, because there are so many inaccuracies in them.” 🙂
