Strong men: Octavian, Popeye, Mozart

On the 17th of January –

Octavian marries Livia Drussila; Popeye appear for the first time; Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate premieres

Octavian (aka emperor Augustus) marries Livia Drussila in the year 38 CE. Don’t they make a lovely couple:

Popeye appears for the first time as a character in the Thimble Theatre comic strip in 1929. Later he had a terrific international movie career. Here is a parody/adaptation by Dutch political cartoonist Jordaan, featuring Olive Oil and Brutus (another Roman reference…) as well:

Mozart‘s motet Exultate Jubilate is performed for the first time in 1773 in Milan. Best known part from this motet is the ‘Halleluja’:
