British philosopher, scientist and writer Sir Francis Bacon is born in 1561 in London.

Grigori Rasputin, Russian monk and amateur politician is born in 1869 – he is murdered in 1916. He is such an enigmatic figure that he has inspired many works of art, including Jazz music, a song by Boney M., and a semi-pornographic movie. He also has his own ‘appreciation society’ on Facebook…

Queen Victoria dies in 1901 – a conspiracy theorist might find reasons for the fact that she died on the birthday of Rasputin, but I am not going to do that. Although: they did have substantially less than six degrees of separation: the British and Russian royal family were closely linked, so they must at the very least have shaken hands with the same person. UPDATE: This is highly unlikely: Rasputin was only introduced to the family of the Czar after 1904.
