Apple Macintosh, Rachmaninoff, Farinelli

On the 24th of January –

The first Apple Macintosh goes on sale in 1984. I won’t get into the religious debate of the relative merits of Apple machines versus real computers, but one thing is sure: Apple Inc. understands how marketing works. Looking back the original Mac looks pretty ugly, but compared to the original IBM PC, it’s pure eyecandy:

The opera Francesca da Rimini by Rachmaninoff premieres in Moscow in 1906:

Italian castrato singer Farinelli is born as Carlo Maria Broschi in 1705 in Andria in Italy:
Carlo Broschi, called Farinelli
Of course no recordings of his voice exist, but here and here are some of his late-19th-century successor Alessandro Moreschi, castrato singer in the Sistine Chapel.
