New Amsterdam, Battle of Stalingrad, Fritz Kreisler

On the 2nd of February –

In 1653 Nieuw Amsterdam was incorporated – this later became the City of New York. How is this European history? Well, at the time Nieuw Amsterdam was a Dutch colony. The Dutch then very cleverly traded it with the English for Surinam 🙂

In 1943 the Battle of Stalingrad ends with the capture of 91.000 German soldiers. In one of the most gruesome and drawn-out battles ever an estimated 2 Million people were killed or wounded.

In 1875 Austrian violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna. In Europeana we have over 75 sound fragments of his music, or of music played by him.
