Vasco da Gama, Venera 1, Jan Swammerdam

On the 12th of February –

In 1502 Vasco da Gama set sail from Lisbon on his second voyage to India. He had been, in 1498, the first to reach India over sea via Cape of Good Hope. Well, he and the 170-odd man who actually sailed his ships, of course.

The USSR sends the unmanned research probe Venera 1 to Venus in 1961. Here is a picture of a test flight for successor Venera 4 in 1967:

Dutch biologist Jan Swammerdam is born in 1637. Here is his major work on insects, with a preface by Boerhaave:
