l’Orfeo, Salman Rushdie, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola

On the 24th of February –

The opera L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi premieres in 1607 during the Carnival at Mantua. It is one of the oldest opera’s that are still performed regularly. The nice thing about Europeana is that we also have historic recordings of works such as this. This one is from 1923:
L'Ofeo : [Version Malipiero, 1923] : [ / Claudio Monteverdi, comp. ; Giocomo Benvenuti, réalisation ; Genevra Vivante, S (Euridice, Musique) ; Enrico De Franceschi, BAR (Orfeo) ; Elena Nicolai, MS (La Messagere)... [et al.] ; Enrico Lombardi, T (Berger I) ; Choeur et Orchestre de La Scala ; Ferrucio Calusio, dir.
Other fragments can be found here.

In 1989 Ayatolla Khomeiny issues a fatwa over Salman Rushdie for his book The Satanic Verses – effectively putting a prize of 3 Million dollars on his head.
