Lumière Brothers, Lully, Nicolas Flamel

On the 22nd of March –

In 1895 the brothers Lumière show the first motion picture to a private audience.

The first movie shown was ‘La sortie des usines Lumière’, an exciting epic of people leaving the factory gates of the Lumière factory. It makes one curious after lost treasures such as ‘Removing my calusses’ and ‘Watching the grass grow’.

French composer and conductor Jean-Baptiste Lully dies in 1687 after stabbing himself in the foot with the long stick he used to indicate the pace. From this incident the Dutch word ‘lullig’ (English: silly) is derived.

In 1418 Nicolas Flamel, French Alchemist, dies, proving that the rumours that he discovered the Philosopher’s Stone are not true.

He much later made an appearance in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first book in the series, and will forever be linked to that in popular culture:
