Bernard de Clairvaux, Chios, Eiffel Tower

On the 31st of March –

In 1146 Bernard of Clairvaux holds his famous sermon in the field, building up the anthousiasm for the Second Crusade. Actually, his sermon was just part of a well-thought-out publicity campaign. But to the public eye, this sermon, which apparrently motivated King Louis VII to join the cusade, was the tipping point.

In 1822 the Greek population of Chios was massacred by soldiers of teh Ottoman empire. The event inspired Delacroix to a famous painting:

In 1889 the Eiffel tower is inaugurated in Paris:
