James Bond, Year of Six Emperors, Victual Brothers

On the 20th of April –

In 2008 the Ashton Martin driven by ‘James Bond‘ in the shooting of the movie ‘Quantum of Solace’ runs off the road when it is not supposed to and is damaged beyond repair – it drives straight into the Lago Maggiore. The stuntman driving the vehicle is unharmed, and the crew has four more cars available.

In 238, the Year of the Six Emperors, the Roman Senate appoints Pupienus and Albinus to the throne.

The other four emperors that year were Maximinius Thrax, Gordianus I and his son Gordianus II, and his grandson Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius (or Gordianus III). Here are their portraits on some coins:
Maximinus Thrax
Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sempronianus Romanus Africanus. (Gordianus I, no thumbnail but a great image).

And we wonder why Italy has such a high turnover in governments…

In 1401 the Victual Brothers, a band of pirates/freedom fighters (depending on your position in the conflict) were defeated in a sea battle off Heligoland. This 1390 fresco is supposed to represent one of them – although I find it hard to see a pirate in this image:
