World No Tobacco Day

On the 31st of May –

It is World No Tobacco Day (Werelddag zonder tabak), organised every year by the World Health Organization. Tobacco is responsible for one in ten deaths worldwide and incredibly is still legal. Tobacco advertising is being regulated more and more, up to a point where tobacco ads are now relegated to museums and archives. Here are a few from Europeana:

In advertising tobacco is associated wit American Indians:
Crüwell-Tabak / Inka

Or with cowboys and the Wild West:
Marlboro
According to wikipedia: “Three men who appeared in Marlboro advertisements – Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Dick Hammer – died of lung cancer”

Or with sports:
Pancarte 'Stadion'; speerwerper met reclame voor sigaretten

Or with the jet-set lifestyle:
Peter Stuyvesant, Filter 20, the international Passport to smoking pleasure /;ATELIER FRITZ BÜHLER / DRUCK GEBR. FRETZ A.G., ZÜRICH

Disclaimer: Smoking is lethal, do not smoke. The display here of smoking advertising is not in any way meant to endorse smoking – simply to show that smoking is a quaint (and quite deadly) remnant of an ignorant past. Already in 1867 people were warning against the adverse health effects of smoking:
But there was a long history of health claims associated with tobacco:
