the artist formerly known as Edward VIII marries Wallis Simpson

On the 3rd of June –

in 1936 the Duke of Windsor (formerly known as King Edward VIII) marries Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, for whom he resigned his claim to the throne of England.

We have some interesting video footage on the affair from a Dutch newsreel – unfortunately without a thumnail.

After Edwards abdication, his younger brother took up the challenge and became King George VI – now again in the public eye through the marvellous film The King’s Speech. King George VI in Europeana:
