Duccio’s Maestà unveiled

On the 9th of June –

In 1310 Duccio’s Maestà Altarpiece was unveiled in the Siena Cathedral. The fact alone that we know both the name of the artist, and the precise date on which this work was unveiled, shows that ‘something was up’ in the world of art – that something would later be known as the ‘Italian Renaissance’.
The very big altarpiece was cut up un the 18th century to be distriubuted over two altars, and in the process some parts got diverted to other churches and collections. It would be an interesting Europeana project to try and combine such scattered objects in the virtual world…
