invention of sliced bread

On the 7th of July –

In 1928 factory-sliced bread was sold for the first time in the USA. It was advertised as ‘the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped’ – trust those yanks to market the hell out of any minor change – regardless of whether it is an improvement or not.

This gives me the opprtunity to show one of my favourite images from Europeana: how often do we get to see the actual photographer of cultural heritage material. Here is an ode to sliced bread and to these unsug heroes of our battle to provide online access to cultural heritage:
