Nicolaas Heinsius the elder

On the 20th of July –

In 1620 Dutch diplomat, classical scholar and poet Nicolaas Heinsius the Elder was born in Leyden. He amassed a vast (13.000 items) library of classical authors, which was auctioned off in 1683 after his death in 1681. The auction catalogue became one of the prime sources for bibliographic research in the 17th century.
