Aswan High Dam completed

On the 21st of July –

In 1970 construction on Aswan High Dam is completed, and the dam is opened – well, closed actually. The project intended to make the Nile waters more predicatble and to generate electric power. Construction had started in 1960. The resulting lake flooded a large number of villages, displacing 100.000 people, and necessitated the move of the temple complex at Abu Simbel.
