Machu Picchu rediscovered by Hiram Bingham

On the 24th of July –

100 YEARS AGO TODAY:

The ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by Indiana Jones Hiram Bingham. It is a magnificently preserved site of an ancient culture.
This image is from Bingham’s 1913 National Geographic article ‘Rediscovering Machu Picchu – In the wonderland in Peru’ – somehow it wound up in a Swedish cultural heritage collection?

It now attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, which puts the conservation of the site at risk. The wrath of the Inca gods is not invoked lightly: 25 dead in heavy rains and landslides in 2010:

Not long now – on 21 of December 2012 the world will end, according to some interpretations of the Inca calendar. I will postpone buying a present for my wife’s birthday (on the 22nd) until I know we still have a world then 🙂
