Jesse Owens wins gold at 100m dash

On the 3rd of August –

75 years ago today

Jesse Owens wins the 100m dash at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, defeating Ralph Metcalfe, also an African-American. Dutchman Tinus Ossendarp came in third – the excessive praise he got after being the best white athlete at the event from the race-obsessed nazi-Germans may have contibuted to his decision to join the NSB and later the SS during the WWII.

We even have moving mages of this 100m race in Europeana – though well-hidden in a French news report about a 1994 new world record by Leroy Burrell – they compare his run with previous record holders, ending with the oldest one they have footage of: Owens’ race in 1936.
