Magellan leaves from Seville

On the 10th of August –

Ferdinand Magellan sets out from Seville with five ships for his – the first – circumnavigation of the globe by ship. He didn’t actually complete the voyage, as he was killed in the Phillipines. His second in command Sebastian Elcano, and 18 of his crewman were the first humans to actually complete a circumnavigation of the earth.

The general public learned of the circumnavigation of the globe through Maximilianus Transylvanus’ De Moluccis insulis:
De Moluccis insulis : itemq[ue] alijs pluribus mira[n]dis, quae nouissima Castellanorum nauigatio Sereniß. Imperatoris Caroli.V. auspicio suscepta. nuper inuenit: Maximiliani Transyluani ad Reuerendiss. Cardinalem Saltzburgensem epistola lectu perquam iucunda

Antonio Pigafetta’s journal is the best eye-witness account we have of the journey:
Premier voyage autour du monde par le Chevr Pigafetta sur l'escadre de Magellan, pendant les années 1519, 20, 21 et 22, suivi de l'extrait du Traité de navigation du même auteur et d'une Notice sur le chevalier Martin Behaim, avec la description de son globe terrestre[par M. de Murr] ; [traduit de l'allemand par H. Jansen]
