City of Rhodes captured by Knights of St. John

On the 15th of August –

The Knights of St. John capture the City of Rhodes, thereby completing their conquest of the island. They rename themselves Knights of Rhodes, later still they restyle themselves into the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. They were a military order, a religious fighting force established even before the First Crusade to defend and care for the Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem. After the First Crusade they became solely military in purpose. Today the descending organisation provides bot war- and peacetime medical services – ostensibly without regard for colour or creed, but from a Roman Catholic motivation.
