Matthew Webb swims the Channel

On the 25th of August –

In 1875 Captain Matthew Webb is the first to swim the Emglish Channel, swimming from Dover to Calais.

In 1910 a monument was erected in Dover for Captain Webb:
Webb memorial, Marine Parade, Dover, Kent

After his record swim, he became a professional swimmer and daredevil – the Evel Knievel of his day. He died in 1883 in an attempt to swim the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls.
